Awake Bright Turn Cream Review
March 13, 2008Bright Turn Cream is a lightening cream from the Japanese line AWAKE. This established Japanese brand, launched in the United States in 1997, advertises to use natural botanical extracts along with the most advanced Japanese technologies. Since this is a lightening cream, it would be more effective to use at night but, if use during the day, should use a separate Sunscreen as it does not contain an SPF.
Awake Bright Turn Cream Ingredients
This brightening moisturizer contains plant extracts that are said to “promote an even complexion and enhance skin radiation…and work on different levels to break down Melanin deposits and control production of melanocytes that cause dark spots and uneven pigmentation.” This unique blend of plant extracts includes Cistus Ladaniferus, or Rock Rose, a white flower plant extract native to the Mediterranean known for essential oils and possible brightening properties, Glycyrrhiza Glabra Root Extract, or Licorice, known for lightening properties, and Saccharum Officinarum Extract, which is Brown Sugar Cane. Another ingredient, Ascorbyl Glucoside, or non-oxidized Vitamin C, is a whitening agent that has been said to improve discoloration. This cream also contains Limnanthes Alba Seed, or Meadowform Oil, which is an herbaceous winter plant native to the Pacific Northwest and, with its high content of fatty acids, is a highly-effective moisturizer. Some additional ingredients include Shea Butter, which offers nourishing and healing properties, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, which is a terrific Antioxidant, and Lactic Acid, which serves as a gentle alternative to Glycolic Acid to accelerate cell turnover.
Sounds good so far? Unfortunately, like appearances, even moisturizers can be deceiving! For a company that prides itself on using the most gentle, Natural Ingredients suitable even for sensitive skin, how come the first few ingredients (which represent the highest concentration) are in the same family of compounds used in anti-freeze?! Namely, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, and Propylene Glycol. Granted, Ethylene Glycol is the one to be wary since that is the one used in automotive antifreeze (but HIGHLY doubt you will find that in any cosmetic!) These other “glycols” are approved for cosmetic grade use and serve as humectants (substances that draw moisture from the air). However, considering the fact that AWAKE markets itself as a high-quality botanicals skincare line, aren’t there less harsh ingredients to use? Specifically, for the components that represent the largest concentration of the product, shouldn’t they use ingredients which are more in-line with the Company’s stated philosophy?!
I do like Bright Turn Cream’s use of high-quality ingredients, and found my helped my skin appear more supple and my complexion more even-tone. However, I did not see any significant fading of brown spots and discoloration and, subsequently, not convinced this blend of plant extracts do the trick. Wake up AWAKE and don't charge high prices if do not use all high-quality ingredients that truly work. And too many glycols spoil the broth!
Price: $78 for 4.3 oz.
