Allure Magazine “Home Brews”: Old Wives’ Tales or Effective Skin Care?

In the current November issue of Allure Magazine, the article “Home Brews” consults with skin care experts and discusses the validity of home beauty remedies.  Here is Beauty Beat’s synopsis:

Pimples
Home Remedy: Aspirin
Generic Asprin contains Salicylic Acid (contained in Acne medications).  Could penetrate the oil and employ anti-inflammatory properties but may be irritating for sensitive skin.
Home Remedy: White Toothpaste
Toothpaste used to contain Zinc that was known to decrease inflammation but today’s toothpastes no longer contain it and the fluoride may irritate the skin and worsen acne.
Home Remedy: Lemon Juice
May dehydrate skin but will cause irritation and no benefit.
Home Remedy: Baking Soda
Baking Soda and Water helps to neutralize acids so may feel soothing but will not have any effect on acne.  However, it serves as a great exfoliator or toothpaste!
Home Remedy: Visine
“Gets the red out” may not just apply to eyes.  Using Visine may shrink blood vessels and make pimples look less inflamed.
Home Remedy: Anti-wart drops
Although also contains Salicylic Acid, the concentration is much too high for acne so avoid altogether!

Blackheads
Home Remedy: Glue
Don’t!  Can rip the skin and cause irritant dermatitis.

Puffy Eyes
Home Remedy: Frozen Peas
Any ice pack helps reduce swelling.  Peas mold to the eye area so may want to stock up on Green Giant!
Home Remedy: Tea Bags
Dipping caffeinated tea bags in cold water and placing them on the eyelids will help to depuff the eyes, and the caffeine serves to shrink blood vessels and swelling.  But avoid Earl Grey- contains an oil that may be irritating.
Home Remedy: Cucumbers
Chilled cucumbers help to deflate the eyes and fit nicely over the eye area.

Irritated Skin
Home Remedy: Milk
Milk contains proteins and fats so adding to a bath or compress can soothe irritated skin but will evaporate so is important to moisturize afterward!
Home Remedy: Aloe
Aloe’s soothing and anti-inflammatory properties act as a natural calming salve, but first make sure you are not sensitive to it.

Wrinkles
Home Remedy: Household Cleaners
To use as a chemical peel?  One word: DON’T!
Home Remedy: Paper Tape
A less expensive version of Frownies.  May help lines from getting worse.
Home Remedy: Egg Whites
The albumen in egg whites contracts when it dries which may temporarily tighten skin.  However, when washed off the effects are gone so best not to walk around wiht egg on the face!

Dry Hands
Home Remedy: Vegetable Shortening

Crisco does moisturize dry skin (but so will any oil!)
