Ah-ha AHA!

Juice Beauty Green Apple PeelAs winter finally settled in here in New York (at least for two days!) I find my skin is more in need of a good exfoliation.  Although I typically prefer a gentle, natural, granular scrub or a homemade one (like oatmeal or brown sugar and honey), I like to mix it up sometimes with an Alpha Hydroxy Acid.

The use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, or AHAs, has been shown to help reduce fine facial lines and improve the overall smoothness and texture of the skin.  They are used by dermatologists in high concentrations in chemical peels, and offered in home kits in low concentrations.  The most widely used AHA, and one that is considered most effective, is Glycolic Acid, usually manufactured from sugar cane.  Another common AHA is Lactic Acid, derived primarily from milk.  Lactic Acid is considered to be good for sensitive skin since it is milder and less irritating on the skin than Glycolic Acid.  Some common side effects from AHAs include peeling, redness, flaking, and increased sensitivity to the sun.  The extent depends on the concentration used, with chemical peels having more severe side effects than over-the-counter AHAs.  When using AHAs, it is strongly recommended to limit exposure to the sun and always use a sunscreen.

One of my favorite alpha-hydroxy products is Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel.  This exfoliant contains organic Glycolic and Lactic Acids (and also comes in a Sensitive Treatment as well for us sensitive skin types!)  Read the full review at My Beauty Beat Juice Beauty

I LOVE Juice Beauty Products too but find that the full strength version of this is too strong for normal skin too. prefer the sensitive treatment but still great review- Jen

I like the Peter Thomas Roth pads with glycolic acid. Think they work the best.
