A Match of Muscle Relaxants: GABA vs Botox
There are many topical skin care products on the market that compare themselves to Botox. I certainly would prefer using a cream to a (poison-like!) injectable but, logically, it does not seem likely to compare. How can you relax the muscles on the face and smooth out wrinkles with an over-the-counter skin care product?
Gamma Aminobutyric Acid, or GABA, is a substance found in the human nervous system that can block signals between nerves and muscles. Skin care companies that use GABA in their products claim it topically relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles on the face. This has been referred to as “Botox in a Jar.” GABA coagulates when it dries and, subsequently, “grips” the skin in place. One popular line of products that uses GABA is Freeze 24.7.
This “inhibitory neurotransmitter” is found in the body’s nervous system. GABA has been referred to as the brain’s “natural calming agent” since it regulates brain and nerve cell activity by inhibiting over-stimulation of neurons. Freeze 24.7 uses this “natural muscle relaxant” topically to encourage relaxation of fine lines on the face.
I have used the popular Freeze products for both the face and eyes. At first I was enthusiastic about the skin tightening I noticed (although temporary) but, like many of us fickle skin care enthusiasts, started to lose interest over time. Particularly because I could never get it together in terms of the best way to apply Freeze without causing dryness and difficulty in applying makeup. In other words, I could not determine if it retains the tightening effect when I would apply a moisturizer over it so that makeup would not look cakey? Or was it better to apply underneath? But would that negate the effect? Regardless, the effect is temporary, and does not rival the the dramatic results and duration of injected Botox. I’m all for using proper skin care products over injectables but, if erasing your natural expressions lines is the look you want, the latter wins this match.
