Check the Oil

In treating Oily skin, there is a common misperception that using Oil-control type products will lead to an increase in sebum (oil) production.  Although it is important not to “overwash” oily skin, it is just as important to clean it with a thorough but gentle cleanser to keep the skin’s natural oil in balance.  As a result, it may be best not to use soap which may strip the skin of its natural oils and lead to irritation.

Two “Oil cleansers” that may work well on Oily skin include:
Shu Uemura High Performance Balancing Cleansing Oil Fresh Contains Cherry Extract and Sakura Fragrance  Price $28  Available On-Line:  Shu Uemura Cleansing Oil
Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil Contains Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Rose Hip, Green Tea, …

The Dirty on Soap

Many commercial soaps and body cleansers contain the ingredients Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Tallowate, or Sodium Laureth Sulfate.  Soap is derived from either oils or fats.  Most traditional soaps, sold in drug stores and supermarkets, are drying and potentially irritating to the skin due to their high alkaline (or pH) base.  Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate is a foaming agent, known as a Surfactant, an inexpensive ingredient derived from Coconut Oil.  Although soaps that contain these ingredients lather and clean well, in effect, these soaps are unnecessarily harsh, and may strip the skin of its natural oils.

Beauty Beat advises not to let these types of soaps anywhere near the delicate skin of the face!  While it is important to clean the face …

Sunscreen 101

Skin care experts say that sun damage is the leading cause of premature aging to the skin. By exposing the skin to the suns’ harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, the texture and appearance of the skin changes. UV rays, an invisible form of radiation that penetrates and changes the structure of skin cells, are present year-round. UVA rays penetrate the deep layers of the skin, are cumulative, and are the primary cause of premature aging. UVB rays impact the surface layer of the skin, cause sunburn, and can contribute to skin cancer.  Beauty Beat reiterates the importance of wearing a sunscreen everyday.

SPF stands for “sun protection factor” and protects the skin from UVB rays. The SPF number states how long you …

The Art of Applying Eye Cream

Yes there is an art to it! One of the most important pieces of advice Beauty Beat can share with its readers, in using an eye cream, is the application of it. In short, use the RING FINGER! The skin surrounding the eyes is fragile and requires a delicate touch. Using the ring finger to apply a product on the skin provides the least pressure. Since the skin directly above and below the eye contains no oil glands, it is important to apply the cream only along its surrounding bone. Applying a moisturizer under the eye or on the eyelid is of no value! Without oil glands, a moisturizer cannot be absorbed, and its only effect is to seep into …

Anti-Aging? Fight Free Radicals with Antioxidants.

Free Radicals are created naturally in the body, but are also formed in increasing numbers from the environment. Some examples include pollution, cigarette smoke, and UV radiation. These oxygen molecules break down Collagen, which, in turn, cause wrinkles and sagging. Antioxidants work by neutralizing Free Radicals, and help to preserve these components of the skin.

Two of Beauty Beat’s favorite antioxidants are Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid) and Green Tea (polyphenol isolates). These antioxidants are most potent in a serum compostion. Topical Vitamin C is effective only in the form of L-Ascorbic Acid. In this state, it has been shown to help increase Collagen synthesis. Beauty Beat advises to look carefully at the ingredients listed on a product. Although “Vitamin C” may be …
